The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.
Candidates
Cedar County Candidate filing begins March 4, 2024 and the last day to file is on March 22, 2024 at 5:00 P.M. County candidates will file the Affidavit of Candidacy and Nomination Petition to the County Auditor.
Pre-Registration deadline for voter registration closes at 5 P.M., Monday, May 20, 2024. Persons wishing to participate in this election who register to vote after May 20 will be required to provide proof of identification (i.e. current and valid photo identification card with an expiration date), AND proof of residency in their voting precinct, when they go to the polls on election day, or when they request an absentee ballot in-person. Other provisions may also apply. Persons not registered to vote by May 20, should expect a longer processing time at the polls on election day.
Absentee Ballots
The first day to submit an absentee ballot request form is March 26, 2024.
Absentee Ballots will be available beginning Wednesday, May 15, 2024, for mail and in-person voting. Download the absentee ballot request form here. Requests for absentee ballots must be in writing and should be mailed or delivered to: Cedar County Auditor, 400 Cedar Street, Tipton, Iowa 52772. Make sure you fill out the form completely, designate your party affiliation, sign and date the form.
The last day an absentee ballot may be mailed to a voter for this election is Monday, May 20, 2024.
The last day to vote absentee in-person in the office of the Cedar County Auditor is 4:00 P.M. on Monday, June 3, 2024.
The Auditor's Office will be open Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for in-person voting.
All absentee ballots must be received at the Auditor's Office by 8 p.m. on Election Day to be considered on time to be counted.
The Candidates' Affidavit of Candidacy and Nomination Petitions are available for public viewing at the Auditor's Office, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
